Juneteenth commemorates the end of slavery in the United States and has been widely celebrated by African Americans through the decades. In 2021, Juneteenth became the latest federal holiday and is steadily gaining the recognition it deserves. Juneteenth is enjoyed through celebratory gatherings with loved ones, rest, and remembrance. This important holiday is also a reminder of the necessary work to support African Americans working towards a more equitable society.
Cancer Research And Biostatistics (CRAB) work to help bring more equity in cancer research includes our collaboration with Dr. Gareth Morgan at NYU Langone. Smoldering Multiple Myeloma (SMM) is a non-symptomatic pre-curser to Multiple Myeloma (MM). It is not understood why African Americans progress to symptomatic MM faster than European Americans. The goal of the study is to determine whether the reasons are environmental or genetic in nature. As a cancer research organization supporting clinical trials development, it is important to understand how race may factor in on positive health outcomes for all walks of life.
